Make a Scarecrow

Keep the birds away from your vegetable patch by creating your own scarecrow.

What you need:

  • String
  • Old pillow case for head
  • Straw, rags or leaves for stuffing
  • Old shirt and jeans
  • Waterproof marker pens to draw face
  • Old shoes if you want feet
  • An old hat and wool or yarn for hair
  • A stake

scarecrowStuff the pillow case with your choice of filling and tie the bottom with string then you can use the markers or anything else you can find, like buttons, to create the face.  Then button up the shirt and tie the bottom and the end of the sleeves with string and fill the arms and body with your stuffing.   Carefully put the stake through the back of the shirt and fix it with string. There needs to be enough of the stake poking through the top to fix the head.

Next tie the bottom of the jeans with string and fill each leg with your stuffing up to the waist.  You can attach the jeans to the shirt by creating braces out of string running them over the shoulders of your scarecrow and attaching them to the front and back of the jeans.  By running string through the loops of the jeans you can attach them to the stake.

Attach the pillow case or face of the scarecrow to the top of the stake and add a hat or wool as hair if you wish.  You can then stake the scarecrow in your vegetable garden ready to keep away the birds.
