Make Potato Prints

In case the rain brings you indoors here’s an activity for inside.

What you need:

  • Potatoes
  • Water based paint
  • A saucer for the paint
  • Knife – the cutting will require adult help – or you could try biscuit cutters
  • Paper
  • Pencil or marker pen

potatoesCut a potato in half draw the shape you want onto the potato surface using the pencil or pen.  With the help of an adult cut round the shape with a kitchen knife so that your design is raised up on the surface of the potato.

Pour some paint onto a saucer and dip the potato in the paint, it needs to be evenly coated but if there is too much paint the stamp will slip on the paper.  You can always remove excess paint by stamping first onto some waste paper.

You can then stamp your design onto paper, if you wish to try a different colour just wash the potato and use again with another colour paint.

If you wish to add to your picture you can leave the paint to dry and then add other decorations like glitter or draw onto the shapes.

Don’t let your potato dry out it might change the design.
