The Topsham School

Tophsham SchoolThe Topsham School is embracing the concept of grow your own by learning to grow vegetables in a poly tunnel provided by Ian Shears from the local Highfield farm. The children are able to walk to the farm from the school and hope to learn to grow a variety of vegetables over the coming year.

Justin Vernon the teacher involved in the project says “Encouraging children to learn about gardening is one of the ways in which we spend time learning in an outdoor environment this helps us to provide an active, integrated curriculum”.

“A big thank you for the Rocket Garden which arrived today. We got straight on with looking at it and unpacking the plants with our Year 2 and 3 classes. Some of the children who attended the launch of Dig Down South West emptied the box and got to work digging in the worm cast. Then they were joined by children from Year 3 and 4 to do the planting. We are using these plants in our Foodshare bed (the crops from these raised beds will be given to a local charity to use in the meals they offer the local elderly residents at a subsidised rate). We’re really looking forward to seeing how our crops grow in the coming months.”
